A letter after ULBD for a slip disc and stenosis
I am writing to express my sincere gratitude for the surgery you performed on August 19, 2025, to treat my severe L4/5 spinal stenosis. The procedure has completely resolved my walking difficulties (claudication), and I am now able to walk two miles without stopping — a significant improvement that has greatly enhanced my quality of life.
Before the surgery, I had to stop and rest after walking only 100 to 200 feet, and I lived with the constant worry that I might eventually lose control of my bladder.
Looking back at photos and videos from my trips to Amsterdam in April and London in June, I recall the embarrassment that I was searching all the time for places to sit — stairs, chairs, rocks, or curbs — simply to relieve the discomfort and fatigue. At the time, I feared that this would become a permanent part of my life.
I am very grateful that the ULBD minimally invasive spine surgery was an option in my case. I was particularly concerned about a spinal fusion, which would not have been ideal given my Parkinson’s disease and the potential need for future additional procedures.
Since the operation, I have not only regained the ability to walk long distances without interruption, but my bladder control has also returned to normal, and the urgency I previously experienced has disappeared.
I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to you and your entire team for the outstanding care I received. The operation brochure you gave me was thoroughly prepared and has been helpful all the time. You have truly given me back the freedom to walk — something I no longer take for granted.
Thank you once again for your exceptional surgical skill, professionalism, and dedication.

“This was my first surgery ever (at age 31) and Dr. Li made everything so easy. I had my C7 disk replaced, and everything from the surgery, to the recovery, to the follow up have been painless and easy. Truly a great surgeon!”
“I first met Dr. Li after my PCP referred me to him. Being a good old country boy I was a little concerned at first but I liked his approach, start small and work our way up. I had a herniated disc and we started with a low lumbar injection. That worked about a week and I went back to see Dr. Li. We then scheduled surgery. When I came out of surgery I was 100% pain free thanks to Dr. Li. I had no pain whatsoever, not even from the incision. I recommend Dr. Li wholeheartedly. He listened to my concerns and put me at ease through the entire treatment. He also gave me his cellphone number in the event I had or have any problems. He is great, what can I say.”
“I highly recommend Dr. Li and UVA! For years in MA I was treated for back pain with PT. I had spinal surgery in 2012, followed by many spinal injections, all with limited success. After moving to VA I heard great things about UVA. In researching UVA, I found Dr. Li. His credentials are exceptional! At my first appointment I knew I had found the person who would help me. Dr. Li explained tests and treatment options in detail while we reviewed my x-rays and scans. I underwent major spinal surgery and was home in a week. Recover has been much easier than I expected. I am standing up straight for the first time in years, regaining my strength, and walking without a cane. Dr. Li has called numerous times to follow up with my progress. Not only is Dr. Li a brilliant surgeon and researcher, but he also is a very competent, personable and compassionate person. Thank you Dr. Li for giving me back the ability to live a full life!”
“I was referred to Dr. Li after 10yrs of agony from a herniated disc in my lower back, that refused to get better with years of conservative therapy, injections, denervations and way too many drugs. I was pretty nervous about having back surgery, due to the number of bad outcomes you typically hear on the internet, news, and from other therapists in the business advocating against back surgery until it becomes a worst-case scenario, or you will never be the same afterwards. Dr. Li informed me that under his care, the discectomy/decompression procedures were about 90% successful (better than most knee/shoulder surgeries). He printed off materials he wrote himself about the condition, about the surgery, and what to expect after surgery. He provides you with his personal email address, cell phone, and continually follows up with you and family members after the surgery, making sure everything is going well. He is currently an up and coming ROCKSTAR in the spinal surgery community, and has some of the best & most delicate hands in the business. He was trained at the Columbia Spine Hospital in NYC, one of the best practices in the world for spine surgery. His conservative approach to minimally invasive spine surgery through very small incisions employs state of the art techniques and equipment to minimize recovery time & trauma to the patient. This is compared to much larger incisions & more invasive techniques done by older surgeons that prefer an “old school” approach. He has also been awarded top research grants by the National Institute of Health that puts him in the top 1% of spinal researchers in the US. Its no wonder that UVA recruited him to be a future corner stone of their orthopedics department. Dr. Li is very easy to get along with, and values the long-term relationships with his patients, staff, and students. He has a compassionate, conservative, and holistic approach to spinal procedures, as he fully understands that you are a person, not just a patient-number going through a revolving door.”
“One year ago I underwent spinal surgery performed by Dr. Li. From the initial consultation to post-operative care, Dr. Li exceeded all my expectations. Dr. Li’s knowledge of spinal conditions is truly remarkable. He carefully explained my diagnosis in terms I could understand and provided a detailed breakdown of my treatment options. His confidence and calm demeanor immediately put me at ease, and I knew I was in capable hands. As a result of Dr. Li’s skills, the severe pain that had been affecting me was significantly reduced, my mobility has improved tremendously, and the pain is eliminated. His diligence during surgery was evident in my quick recovery and lack of complications. He took the time to answer all my questions and made sure I was comfortable with every aspect of my treatment. His office staff is equally kind and responsive, making the entire process from surgery to follow-up appointments smooth and stress-free. I cannot thank Dr. Li enough for giving me my quality of life back. I highly recommend him to anyone in need of spinal care. He truly is the best in his field.”
